S4theD: Day 20
Every since yesterday and Kristin Chenoweth I've had stage music in my head. Here's a song from one of my favorite musicals--Gilbert and Sullivan's Mikado.
If You Want to Know Who We Are
by Gilbert and Sullivan
Chorus of Nobles:
If you want to know who we are,
We are gentlemen of Japan:
On many a vase and jar —
On many a screen and fan,
We figure in lively paint:
Our attitude's queer and quaint —
You're wrong if you think it ain't
If you think we are worked by strings,
Like a Japanese marionette,
You don't understand these things:
It is simply Court etiquette.
Perhaps you suppose this throng
Can't keep it up all day long?
If that's your idea, you're wrong,
If that's your idea, you're wrong,
If you want to know who we are,
We are gentlemen of Japan,
On many a vase and jar —
On many a screen and fan,
On many, many, many, many,
Many, many, many, many, a jar,
On vase and jar —
On screen and fan,
Nanki-Poo:
Gentlemen, I pray you tell me
Where a gentle maiden dwelleth,
Named Yum-Yum, the ward of Ko-Ko?
In pity speak, oh speak I pray you!
A Noble:
Why, who are you who ask this question?
Nanki-Poo:
Come gather round me, and I'll tell you.

S4theD: Day 19
Best known as being the first Glenda in the Broadway musical Wicked, Kristin Chenoweth has ever since intrigued me with her varied musical and theatrical tastes and her just as varied musical and theatrical talent...not to mention her humor!
Taylor, the Latte Boy
by Kristin Chenoweth
There's a boy who works at Starbucks
Who is very inspirational.
He is very inspirational because of many things.
I come in at 8:11, and he smiles and says, "How are you?"
When he smiles and says, "How are you?"
I could swear my heart grows wings!
So today at 8:11
I decided I should meet him
I decided I should meet him
In a proper formal way.
So today at 8:11 when he smiled and said "How are you?"
I said "Fine, and my name's Kristin"
And he softly answered, "Hey."
And I said "My name is Kristen, and thank you for the extra foam…"
And he said his name was Taylor,
Which provides the inspiration for this poem:
Taylor the latte boy,
Bring me java, bring me joy!
Oh Taylor the latte boy,
I love him, I love him, I love him…
So I'd like to get my nerve up
To recite my poem musical.
He would like the fact it's musical
Because he plays guitar.
So today at 8:11, Taylor told me he was playing
In a band down in the village in the basement of a bar.
And he smoothly flipped the lever to prepare my double latte,
But for me he made it triple! And he didn't think I knew
But I saw him flip the lever, and for me he made it triple,
And I knew that triple latte meant that Taylor loved me too!
I said, "What time are you playing? And thank you for the extra skim…"
He said, "Keep the $3.55," because this triple latte was on him.
Taylor the latte boy,
Bring me java, bring me joy!
Oh Taylor the latte boy,
I love him, I love him, I love him…
I used to be the kind of girl who'd run when love rushed toward her.
But finally a voice whispered "Love can be yours, if you step up to the counter, and order."
Taylor, the latte boy
Bring me java, bring me joy
Oh Taylor the latte boy
I love him, I love him, I love him.
So many years my heart has waited,
Who'd have thought that love could be so caffeinated?
Taylor, the latte boy,
I love him, I love him, I love him.
I love him, I love him, I love him.

Not gunna lie, I needed a laugh today, and whenever I think about this album I chuckle. Then whenever I think about the fact that Greg Wilbur gave me this album, I laugh. Don't worry, he thinks it's funny too! So the album is entitled The Roar of Love (today's song is the title track) and was meant to be a tribute to C.S. Lewis' first book in the Narnia series, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Let's just say it's, well, it's very 80's. I'd love to know what Lewis would think about this album!
The Roar of Love
by The Second Chapter of Acts
If he was alive again and we could touch his mane
His golden mane
Hold his face in our hands then we would know he's tame
Call his name
And we'll climb on the lion's back
And we'll fly away
Yes we'll climb on the lion's back
And we'll fly away, fly away, fly away
Lightning flashed into my eyes and I can see him now
See him now
Thunder broke inside my heart and I can feel him now
Feel him now
The roar of love is ringing out, ringing out thru the woods
Thru the woods
Aslan's raised from death to life and we will rise with him
Rise with him
And we'll climb on the lion's back
And we'll fly away
Yes we'll climb on the lion's back
And we'll fly away, fly away, fly away
Fly away, fly

Hold On
by Good Charlotte
This world, this world is cold
But you don't, you don't have to go
You're feeling sad, you're feeling lonely
And no one seems to care
You're mother's gone and your father hits you
This pain you cannot bear
But we all bleed the same way as you do
And we all have the same things to go through
Hold on, if you feel like letting go
Hold on, it gets better than you know
Days, you say they're way too long
And your nights, you can't sleep at all
Hold on
And you're not sure what you're waiting for
But you don't want to know more
And you're not sure what you're looking for
But you don't want to know more
But we all bleed the same way as you do
And we all have the same things to go through
Hold on, if you feel like letting go
Hold on, it gets better than you know
Don't stop looking, you're one step closer
Don't stop searching, it's not over
Hold on
What are you looking for?
What are you waiting for?
Do you know, what you're doing to me?
Go ahead, what are you waiting for?
Hold on, if you feel like letting go
Hold on, it gets better than you know
Don't stop looking, you're one step closer

Years May Come, Years May Go
by Herman's Hermits
Let's take a look behind and see what we can find
Last year has gone for everyone, past with time.
What happened to us then can happen once again
And what's it now to me? History.
Years may come, (years may come)
Years may go, (quickly go)
Some go fast, (very fast)
Some go slow, (oh so slow)
Some are good, (very good)
Some are bad, (very sad)
For each one, (for what comes)
Just be glad, (let's be glad)
Whenever I review
My loving times with you
I wouldn't change a single page
We've lived through
It wasn't always smooth
Sometimes we jumped the groove
We shared some tears,
And then loved again.
Years may come, (years may come)
Years may go, (quickly go)
Some go fast, (very fast)
Some go slow, (oh so slow)
Some are good, (very good)
Some are bad, (very sad)
For each one, (for what comes)
Just be glad, (let's be glad)
Some heartaches I don't doubt
Life's sure to dish us out
We'll beat the lot and that is what
Life's all about.
What ever may come true
Ahead for me and you
Someday it all will be
Memory

The Devil Went Down to Georgia
by Charlie Daniels
The devil went down to Georgia, he was looking for a soul to steal.
He was in a bind 'cos he was way behind: he was willin' to make a deal.
When he came across this young man sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot.
And the devil jumped upon a hickory stump and said: "Boy let me tell you what:
"I bet you didn't know it, but I'm a fiddle player too.
"And if you'd care to take a dare, I'll make a bet with you.
"Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy, but give the devil his due:
"I bet a fiddle of gold against your soul, 'cos I think I'm better than you."
The boy said: "My name's Johnny and it might be a sin,
"But I'll take your bet, your gonna regret, 'cos I'm the best that's ever been."
Johnny you rosin up your bow and play your fiddle hard.
'Cos hells broke loose in Georgia and the devil deals the cards.
And if you win you get this shiny fiddle made of gold.
But if you lose, the devil gets your soul.
The devil opened up his case and he said: "I'll start this show."
And fire flew from his fingertips as he rosined up his bow.
And he pulled the bow across his strings and it made an evil hiss.
Then a band of demons joined in and it sounded something like this.
When the devil finished, Johnny said: "Well you're pretty good ol' son.
"But sit down in that chair, right there, and let me show you how its done."
Fire on the mountain, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pan, pickin' out dough.
"Granny, does your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."
The devil bowed his head because he knew that he'd been beat.
He laid that golden fiddle on the ground at Johnny's feet.
Johnny said: "Devil just come on back if you ever want to try again.
"I told you once, you son of a "gun", I'm the best that's ever been."
And he played fire on the mountain, run boys, run.
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun.
Chicken in the bread pan, now they're pickin' out dough.
"Granny, will your dog bite?"
"No, child, no."

Constant
by Francesca Battistelli
I’m just a little bit afraid of where I’m going
And it feels like a hurricane is blowing over
Though I can’t find the ground below
I’ve lived enough to know
I’ve lived enough to know
You’re my constant in every moment
Constant
You’ve never failed me
All my life
You have never left my side
You are my constant
Okay I really don’t like change but I can’t stop it
I’m moving forward anyway with the promise
You are the anchor for my soul
That’s all I need to know
That’s all I need to know
You’re my constant in every moment
Constant
You’ve never failed me
All my life
You have never left my side
You are my constant
Before I was a thought on earth
You knew me then and You gave me worth
When all of this is said and done
You will be the One I’m standing on
You’re my constant in every moment
Constant
You’ve never failed me
All my life
You have never left my side
You are my constant

Portobello Road
from the soundtrack to Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Portobello Road, Portobello Road
Street where the riches of ages are stowed.
Anything and everything a chap can unload
Is sold off the barrow in Portebello road.
You’ll find what you want in the Portebello road.
Rare alabaster? Genuine plaster!
A filigreed samovar owned by the czars.
A pen used by Shelley? A new Boticelli?
The sniper that clipped old King Edward’s cigars?
Waterford Crystals? Napoleon’s pistols?
Society heirlooms with genuine gems!
Rembrandts! El Greco’s! Toulouse-Letrec’os!
Painted last week on the banks of the Thames!
Portobello road, Portobello road!
Street where the riches of ages are stowed
Anything and everything a chap can unload
Is sold off the barrow in Portobello road.
You’ll meet all your chums in the Portobello road
There’s pure inspiration in every creation.
No cheap imitations, not here in me store.
With garments as such as was worn by a Duchess.
Just once at some royal occasion of yore.
In Portobollo Road, Portobello Road
The fancies and fineries of ages are showed.
A lady will always feel dressed a la mode
In frillies she finds in the Portobollo road.
“Burke’s Peerage;” “The Bride Book;” “The Fishmonger’s Guidebook;”
A Victorian novel, “The Unwanted Son;”
“The History of Potting”, “The Yearbook of Yachting,”
The leather bound “Life of Attila the Hun.”
Portobello Road, Portobello Road
Street where the riches of ages are stowed
Artifacts to glorify our regal abode
Are hidden in the flotsam in Portobello Road
You’ll find what you want in the Portobello Road
Tokens and treasures, yesterday’s pleasures
Cheap imitations of heirlooms of old
Dented and tarnished, scarred and unvarnished
In old Portobello they’re bought and they’re sold

S4theD: Day 10
It's spring break. So while this song is in eager anticipation of my trip to my cabin in the woods (which makes me smile) it is also a cheerful note to begin a short break. I will not be able to send out a S4theD again until Thursday--due to a lack of internet availability--I will nevertheless take note of the songs that pop up in my mind each day and post them later.
Smile
by Uncle Kracker
You're better then the best
I'm lucky just to linger in your light
Cooler then the flip side of my pillow that's right
Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where you send me
Lets me know that it's ok
Yeah it's ok
And the moments when my good times start to fade
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Even when you're gone
Somehow you come along
Just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack and just like that
You steal away the rain and just like that
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Don't know how I lived without you
'Cuz every time that I get around you
I see the best of me inside your eyes
You make me smile
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Oh, you make me smile
Oh, you make me smile
Smile
by Uncle Kracker
You're better then the best
I'm lucky just to linger in your light
Cooler then the flip side of my pillow that's right
Completely unaware
Nothing can compare to where you send me
Lets me know that it's ok
Yeah it's ok
And the moments when my good times start to fade
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
Buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Even when you're gone
Somehow you come along
Just like a flower poking through the sidewalk crack and just like that
You steal away the rain and just like that
You make me smile like the sun
Fall outta bed
Sing like a bird
Dizzy in my head
Spin like a record
Crazy on a Sunday night
You make me dance like a fool
Forget how to breathe
Shine like gold
buzz like a bee
Just the thought of you can drive me wild
Oh, you make me smile
Don't know how I lived without you
'Cuz every time that I get around you

When I Get Where I'm Going
by Brad Paisley
featuring Dolly Parton
When I get where I'm going
On the far side of the sky.
The first thing that I'm gonna do
Is spread my wings and fly.
I'm gonna land beside a lion,
And run my fingers through his mane.
Or I might find out what it's like
To ride a drop of rain
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
There'll be only happy tears.
I will shed the sins and struggles,
I have carried all these years.
And I'll leave my heart wide open,
I will love and have no fear.
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
Don't cry for me down here.
I'm gonna walk with my grandaddy,
And he'll match me step for step,
And I'll tell him how I missed him,
Every minute since he left.
Then I'll hug his neck.
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
There'll be only happy tears.
I will shed the sins and struggles,
I have carried all these years.
And I'll leave my heart wide open,
I will love and have no fear.
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
Don't cry for me down here.
So much pain and so much darkness,
In this world we stumble through.
All these questions, I can't answer,
So much work to do.
But when I get where I'm going,
And I see my Maker's face.
I'll stand forever in the light,
Of His amazing grace.
Yeah when I get where I'm going,
Oh, when I get where I'm going,
There'll be only happy tears.
Hallelujah!
I will love and have no fear.
When I get where I'm going.
Yeah when I get where I'm going.

S4theD: Day 7 (I'm a teacher...I'm calling it "research")
Never Say Never
by Justin Bieber
featuring Jaden Smith
See I never thought that I could walk through fire.
I never thought that I could take the burn.
I never had the strength to take it higher,
Until I reached the point of no return.
And there's just no turning back,
When your hearts under attack,
Gonna give everything I have,
It's my destiny.
I will never say never! (I will fight)
I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up up up,
And never say never.
I never thought I could feel this power.
I never thought that I could feel this free.
I'm strong enough to climb the highest tower.
And I'm fast enough to run across the sea.
And there's just no turning back,
When your hearts under attack,
Gonna give everything I have,
Cause this is my destiny.
I will never say never! (I will fight)
I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up,
Pick it up, up, up,
And never say never.
Here we go!
Guess who?
JSmith and Jb!
I gotcha lil bro.
I can handle him.
Hold up, aight?
I can handle him.
Now he's bigger than me,
Taller than me.
And he's older than me,
And stronger than me.
And his arms a little bit longer than me.
But he ain't on a JB song with me!
I be trying a chill
They be trying to side with the thrill.
No pun intended, was raised by the power of Will.
Like Luke with the force, when push comes to shove.
Like Cobe with the 4th, ice water with blood.
I gotta be the best, and yes
We're the flyest.
Like David and Goliath,
I conquered the giant.
So now I got the world in my hand,
I was born from two stars
So the moon's where I land.
I will never say never! (I will fight)
I will fight till forever! (make it right)
Whenever you knock me down,
I will not stay on the ground.
Pick it up,
Pick it up,

Jackson
sung by HEM
We got married in a fever, hotter than a pepper sprout,
We've been talkin' 'bout Jackson, ever since the fire went out.
Jackson, gonna mess around,
We're goin' to Jackson,
Look out Jackson town.
Come on down to Jackson; go on and wreck your hell.
Play your hand you big-talkin' man, make a big fool of yourself,
In Jackson, see if I care
We're goin' to Jackson; go on comb your hair!
When they find me down in Jackson I'll be dancin' on a Pony Keg.
Follow me 'round like a scalded hound,
Tail between your legs,
In Jackson, baby that's a fact,
We're goin' to Jackson ain't never comin' back,
Ain't never comin' back, ain't never comin' back.
We got married in a fever.
We got married in a fever.

Twang
by George Strait
When I get off of work on Friday
After working like a dog all week
I go to meet the boys for a cold one
At a little joint up the street
They got a jukebox in the corner
Full of old country tunes
Feed it five dollars worth of quarters
Is the first thing I always do
'Cause I need a little twang
A little hillbilly bending on some guitar strings
Some peddle steel whining like a whistle of an old freight train
To get that foot stomping honkey tonkin' feeling going through my veins
I need a little twang, twang, twang
Well, I like a lot of kinds of music
I try to keep an open mind
Depending on the mood to strike me
If I'm gonna stay till closing time
So when I wanna lift my spirits to get me feeling worth a dang
I know I'm gonna have to heart it
'Cause I gotta have some Hank to hang
'Cause I need a little twang
A little hillbilly bending on some guitar strings
Some peddle steel whining like a whistle of an old freight train
To get that foot stomping honkey tonkin' feeling going through my veins
I need a little twang, twang, twang

S4theD: Day 2
Babylon
by David Gray
Friday night I'm going nowhere
All the lights are changing green to red
Turning over TV stations
Situations running through my head
Well looking back through time
You know it's clear that I've been blind
I've been a fool
To open up my heart
To all that jealousy, that bitterness, that ridicule
Saturday I'm running wild
And all the lights are changing red to green
Moving through the crowds I'm pushing
Chemicals all rushing through my bloodstream
Only wish that you were here
You know I'm seeing it so clear
I've been afraid
To tell you how I really feel
Admit to some of those bad mistakes I've made
If you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Babylon, Babylon, Babylon
Sunday all the lights of London
Shining, sky is fading red to blue
I'm kicking through the Autumn leaves
And wondering where it is you might be going to
Turning back for home
You know I'm feeling so alone
I can't believe
Climbing on the stair
I turn around to see you smiling there
In front of me
If you want it
Come and get it
Crying out loud
The love that I was
Giving you was
Never in doubt
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head
And feel it now
Let go your heart
Let go your head

Let go your heart

40 Days of Lent, 40 Days of Song
In the spirit of adding on for the season of Lent, not just taking away or fasting, I have decided that one of the things I am going to add is a quiet moment of musical reflection for each of the next 40 days. Several years ago--in the slower days of life--I sent out to a small group of family and friends what I came to call the S4theD, the Song for the Day. My intention then was to pause in the middle of my day and play whatever prominent, inspiring, or fantastical song came to mind that day with the lyrics in front of me, and to share that fun by sending song and lyrics out to my small group. The exercise became, for me at least, a revelation of just how little I listen to the message of songs and how caught up I became in the catchy tunes.
While all those things will likely hold true for the current exercise of S4theD during this Lententide, the main goal I have is to simply pause on a daily basis. Pause and recall a tune that God used to carry my heart and mind through a difficult time. Pause and reflect on lyrics that remind me of a dear friend. Pause and relish the fact that there is both a hope and a future. My goal is simply to pause and see what becomes of the act.
Float On
by Modest Mouse
I backed my car into a cop car, the other day.
Well he just drove off, sometimes life's ok.
I ran my mouth off a bit too much, oh what did I say.
Well you just laughed it off, it was all ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on any way, well.
A fake Jamaican took every last dime with a scam.
It was worth it just to learn some sleight-of-hand.
Bad news comes don't you worry even when it lands.
Good news will work its way to all them plans.
We both got fired on exactly the same day.
Well we'll float on good news is on the way.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, ok.
And we'll all float on, alright.
Already we'll all float on.
No, don't you worry, we'll all float on.
Alright, already, we'll all float on.
Alright, don't worry, we'll all float on.
Alright already we'll all float on.
Alright already we'll all float on.
Alright don't worry even if things end up a bit too heavy.
We'll all float on...alright. Already we'll all float on.
Alright already we'll all float on, ok.
Don't worry we'll all float on.
Even if things get heavy, we'll all float on.
Alright already we'll all float on.
(Alright)
Don't you worry we'll all float on.
(Alright)
All float on....
